Nick Kellie | Teaching Artist Spotlight

Strumming Success: Nick Kellie, Guiding WCHS PAA Guitar Students Toward Artistic Brilliance

In the heart of West Covina High School Performing Arts Academy (WCHS PAA), where the notes of creativity and passion harmonize, we continue our series spotlighting the talented Teaching Artists who shape the artistic journeys of our students. Today, our spotlight turns to Nick Kellie, a private lessons teacher who imparts his vast experience to our Guitar Students through one-on-one instruction.

A Musical Odyssey with Nick Kellie

Nick Kellie's journey in the music industry is nothing short of remarkable. Currently playing 2nd guitar and contributing backing vocals in Frank Gambale Soulmine featuring Boca, Nick is no stranger to the global stage. Frank Gambale, a Grammy-winning guitarist from the Chick Corea Elektric band, has found in Nick a musical collaborator who adds depth and skill to their performances.

Nick's touring escapades include playing guitar for The Three Degrees, known for their #1 smash hit "When Will I See You Again." Together, they have graced illustrious venues worldwide, including the iconic London O2 arena and the renowned "Iridium Jazz Club" on Broadway, NYC. It's on this very stage that Nick has also showcased his own band, demonstrating not only his prowess as a guitarist but also his ability to lead and captivate audiences.

A Versatile Talent at The Baked Potato

Regularly appearing at the iconic Baked Potato venue, Nick collaborates with acts like Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, channeling the spirit of legendary artists like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. His versatility as a guitarist is further showcased by his debut record, "For A Brother," released on Steve Vai's Digital Nations record label to critical acclaim. Steve Vai, upon hearing the album, personally reached out to Nick, leading to a release on his own label in the USA, Europe, and Asia.

Accolades and Contributions to the Guitar World

Nick's talent extends beyond live performances. In 2005, he was honored with the BBC Big Band Jazz Awards "John Dankworth Trophy for Outstanding Young Soloist" and recorded a special show for BBC Radio 2. As a contributor to the world's biggest-selling guitar magazine, "Guitar Player Magazine," Nick shares his expertise and insights with a global audience. He also imparts his knowledge at the prestigious Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, holding classes that inspire the next generation of guitarists.

Educator, Performer, Innovator

At WCHS PAA, Nick Kellie wears many hats – educator, performer, and innovator. Through private one-on-one lessons, he guides our Guitar Students in their technical skills, musical expression, and artistic development. His book, "Progressive Blues Guitar," published by Hal Leonard Publishing/Musicians Institute Press, serves as a valuable resource for guitar enthusiasts worldwide.

As we continue to showcase the incredible talents within our academy, Nick Kellie stands out as a maestro dedicated to shaping the next generation of guitar virtuosos. Stay tuned for more stories of artistic excellence and mentorship from WCHS PAA, where we are committed to cultivating well-rounded artists who will undoubtedly shape the future of the performing arts industry.
