Instrumental Music Pillar Director

Stephen Olivas graduated from California Polytechnic University, Pomona with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance, specializing in percussion.  His teaching credential was also completed at Cal Poly the following year.  Currently, Mr. Olivas is completing a Masters Degree in Music Education at Azusa Pacific University.  He also completed courses in conducting and music theory at APU.  As a student of music, he performed in a variety of large and small ensembles.  These include: Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Solo Percussion, and Theatrical accompaniment.  As a member of these ensembles, he was invited to tour Europe and the West Coast of California.

Mr. Olivas became the Instrumental Music Director at West Covina High School immediately after his tenure at Cal Poly and has been dedicated to the Bulldog Family for over thirty years.  As the band director, his program has flourished in performance and competition.  The Bulldog Band & Colorguard is the largest performance group on campus and has continued to represent WCHS with pride and dedication.  Other prominent ensembles include: Jazz Ensemble, Indoor Colorguard, Wind Ensemble and Indoor Drumline.

Mr. Olivas continues to perform in jazz ensembles, musicals and blues/rock bands.  He has been the Fine Arts department chairperson at WCHS, represented So. Cal. in DCI panels, received several city and community awards, and continues to strengthen his skills in education through professional organizations like NAfME, SCSBOA, ADLA and WGASC.  He looks forward to completing his teaching career as a proud member of the Bulldog staff.
