Harmony Beyond Horizon: A Day of Dance and Discovery at Citrus College

Exploring the Roots of HipHop and Unveiling the Secrets of College-Level Performing Arts Facilities

a reflection on the West Covina High School Performing Arts Academy’s Academy Wide Dance Workshop

by Alice Chung “AC”

On October 4, 2023, students from the Performing Arts Academy seized the incredible opportunity to participate in a dance workshop hosted by the dean of performing and visual arts, John Vaughan, and Citrus College’s dance instructor, Renee Liskey, right on Citrus College’s campus. The workshop focused on HipHop, allowing us to delve into its history, terminology, and techniques. Personally, I found the experience unforgettable as everyone, especially those with a different emphasis in performing arts than dance, stepped out of their comfort zones. Ms. Liskey's creation of a safe learning environment encouraged everyone to embrace something new. She emphasized the importance of understanding the roots of HipHop, highlighting that this knowledge is as significant as performing the dance itself. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to learn choreography from her, and the memory of being on the stage of Citrus College with my friends will stay with me.

Following the dance workshop, Mr. Vaughan guided us through some performing arts facilities, including various recording studios and storage rooms. The recording rooms had a unique design with angled walls to enhance sound reflection, providing an eye-opening experience different from what we're accustomed to at WCHS. Witnessing real college students in a recording studio, mixing tapes for a Michael Jackson project, was fascinating. The storage rooms were filled with props from musicals, plays, and shows performed by the college, presenting an astonishing contrast to the smaller theater and storage room at WCHS. Mr. Vaughan concluded the tour by sharing details about successful alumni from Citrus College and offering insights into college life as a performing artist. Overall, whether you were a vocalist, instrumentalist, actor, or dancer, there was something valuable to gain from this workshop. The chance to interact with professionals in the performing arts industry is a rare opportunity, and I'll forever treasure this experience and remain grateful for all the opportunities as a PAA student.
